Connecting the Prison and the Community

Aside from making peace with the inherent risk of a prison break, nearly all respondents had a favorable opinion of how the prison impacted their town. To find criticism, I had to probe deeper and ask specifics on how many jobs the prison created or how it affected the economy overall. While most people did not find the prison problematic, some believed the prison did not hire enough locals. They believed that, while the prison did bring people to the area, most new residents settled in Wynne or other surrounding communities instead of Forrest City. When pressed, their comments focused on the role of the warden in determining impact, the role of the prisoners in shaping the town’s demographics, and reservations not so much about whether the prison provided a positive impact, but the degree to which it did.
